I have always wondered how come I had bacterial vaginosis. According to medical literature, when there is an imbalance between good and bad bacteria in the vaginal area, such as the reduction of lactobacillus, the bad bacteria multiply. This bad bacteria attacks the body’s natural defenses and produce toxins that secrete the bad odor.
Like I said earlier, after trying several over the counter treatments for bacterial vaginosis and failing to get rid of it, I eventually decided to go to the doctor. When I first came to the doctor and told him about my case, he immediately gave me a prescription for an antibiotic. Of course, I was glad that time because I was eager to get rid of this uncomfortable feeling. I took the antibiotic and was surprised because after a few weeks, my problem was gone. No more fishy odor and uncomfortable feeling.
But after three to four weeks, my bacterial vaginosis came back. It reoccurred and was not anymore responding to the antibiotic that was initially prescribed to me. I was back to my glum and despair that time.
I learned later that 77 percent of all women treating bacterial vaginosis with pharmaceutical antibiotics suffer from getting it back again. This is because the antibiotics upset the bacterial balance in the vaginal flora. It wipes out even the good bacteria. In this case, without the good bacteria, the bad ones or the odor-causing bacteria are growing unchecked and uncontrolled. That’s the reason why the bacterial vaginosis comes back stronger.
Other causes of bacterial vaginosis that I have read about are the facts that:
- Women who wear thongs are more susceptible to get a Bacterial Vaginosis because the material of the cloth rubs the anus and the vagina.
- Sexually active women between 15 and 44 are also likely to contract bacterial vaginosis that is further aggravated if intimate contact is done with multiple partners.
- In pre-pubescent girls, bacterial vaginosis may be caused by strep, or by bacteria introduced from the anus due to improper hygiene (wiping) after bowel movements.
